Theoretical Particle Physicist, Stephan Hoeche, for SLAC Editorial
These are a couple images from a recent shoot for the excellent editorial team at SLAC National Accelerator Lab in Menlo Park, CA. Stephan is a kind and brilliant scientist in the lab’s world-class theory group. For the chalkboard, he provided what is, apparently, fun content describing certain particle interactions. His drawings sparked some debates among off-camera colleagues. These guys have a finely-tuned shorthand that is cryptic, international, and beautiful (I’m glad we captured the spark for an authentic chalk debate for this backdrop!)
Also, on a techy note, this is a great example of the Canon 85mm f1.2L at it’s very finest.. beautiful what does and does not come through the dreamy blur of an aperture this big. It’s important, aesthetically, to see both context and still to isolate the portrait subject. It’s a real throw-back to the 645 format.
